Sniper competitions have been around for a long time, but with the growing interest in long-range precision shooting, the matches are moving beyond just military and law enforcement personnel.
Case in point: last year’s Fall Allegheny Sniper Challenge held in Seneca Rocks, West Virginia. What made this competition, which was open to civilians; different was that FNH-USA provided all the rifles for the match.

This particular competition was a .308 match, and FNH-USA furnished FN SPR A5s with standard 20-inch fluted barrels and McMillan stocks. Competitors were also issued identical, slings, scopes, rings and mounts.
This equipment-provided match was a first at Allegheny, where shooters engaged 50 steel targets at distances out to 1,200 yards. Competitors had to cope with the region’s rugged hill-and-valley topography, which creates tough shot angles and complicates range estimation (no rangefinders were allowed).
