Thompson/Center Venture Recall

thompson/center venture

Certain Thompson/Center Ventures are being recalled because of a potential problem with the sear.

Thompson/Center is recalling Venture rifles manufactured prior  to October 28, 2011. [Update: Previous versions of this post referred to rifles manufactured from August 1, 2011, to October 28, 2011. The recall now applies to ALL Ventures built prior to October 28, 2011] To determine if your rifle is affected, please reference the serial number list or by calling Smith & Wesson (which owns Thompson/Center) directly at 1-800-713-0356. If your serial number does not fall within the list of affected serial numbers, your rifle is not part of this recall.

When your rifle sear is returned, you should note a punch dot on the trigger assembly. This punch dot is confirmation that your sear has been inspected and the hazard has not been found or has been corrected.

During an internal technical review, Smith & Wesson determined that some of the sears used on Thompson Center Venture rifles produced prior to October 28, 2011, may not have been manufactured to specification.  Because this could lead to an unsafe condition—the rifle could fire without the trigger being pulled—owners of the affected Venture rifles should stop using them immediately.

Contact Smith & Wesson customer service at the phone number above or send an email to venturerecall@smith-wesson.com to facilitate the inspection and repair, if necessary, of your rifle sear. They’ll give you instructions and a prepaid return label for the return of your rifle to Smith & Wesson. When you return your rifle to Smith & Wesson, be sure to attach the completed information card received from Smith & Wesson, so that your sear can be inspected and repaired, and returned to you as quickly and efficiently as possible.

i HOPE MY VENTURE IS NOT AFFECTED, HOWEVER; IF IT IS I'M GLAD S&W/TC IS READY TO STEP UP AND FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS HAS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE RIFLES TO NOW, AND I DON'T SEE THAT CHANGING. GUN GUY/ WISCONSIN

  • NeilYoungs

the problem I'm having is returning the safty to safe position after after it has been in fire position, Is that something to do with the sear?

  • guuuruuu

Big cry babby. s___ happens, get over it. If they didn't recal it and someone got hurt then you would have something to compain about. Sure its an inconvinience and I'm sure they are sorry for that but I for one am glad they found out and are fixing it for free. __I guess if you really only have one gun for hunting then I will simpithise at the poor timing but most of us have a backup gun we can use in the mean time. Some people just compain about everything. You pooor victims

    • mark

that statement came from a well now supplier hmmmm.

  • Mark

you guys are totally orerracting. I bought a S&W I-Bolt 30-06 which had a recall also. I sent in the bolt and they had it back to me in five days. They paid for all the Fedex charges. The service was great. Quit blubbering and be men.

    • mark

i sent my venture back too, sucked when i got it back. packed terrible, scratched barrel up with bolt. glue drops all over stock and bolt area. the new trigger now has 1/8th inch travel before it goes off, didnt even look at the note i put in the box with some questions i had! called today, waited 45 min, no one picked up phone.Wanna give me 525 plus tax? ill sell it too ya.

      • MARK

called them, waited another 45mins. they answered. yep rude! didnt wanta hear it, put over to his supv. no answer. left phone mess. detailed, no return call. clicked over to another department left the mess. there, no return call. emailed them , no return emails. WHAT A BLOW OFF! IM SHIPPING THE GUN BACK. I WANT A REFUND. IM TIRED OF IT. NO MORE SMITH AND WESSONS OR THOMPSON CENTER PRODUCTS EVER AGAIN!

  • cliff

They should at least send you a box to ship it back in!!!! and how about the scope are they going to pay for the rounds to sight it in again. I feel that they are trying to get out of this mess way to cheep. I am sure there will be plenty of people like me and will not send the gun back in due to the "inconvinience" then someday they will have there big lawsuite.

  • Jesse

Most of you people are idiots and a perfect example of what is wrong with this country. The company issues a recall for safety reasons, a problem that most of you idiots would never have encountered and you want to sue them? You are really pathetic. If you don't want to be inconvenienced by sending your rifle back in in a prepaid shipping box both ways, costs you nothing, then don't! But don't complain later down the road when something goes wrong with your rifle. Class action lawsuit? Really? Your son doesn't trust it now? Way to raise a pathetic wimp.

    • Kevin

They have done "F" ALL…Waiting…STILL…to sue their ASS OFF! Jesse your Ass is sucking slew water(work for Smith & Wesson) Idiot!!!

  • Todd

Still they make better rifles than the newer Remingtons. In my view, Remingtons and Marlins have fallen a long way down and their quality control is pathetic. I agree this shouldn't have happened, but I'm much more in favor of having it repaired and still having a damn good rifle (that's extremely accurate too).

  • Chris

I have no problem with the recall. What I have a problem with is them not responding to my emails or sending the shipping label after 2 months from the time I completed the form on their website. I just filed a complaint against them with the BBB. Maybe they'll respond to that.

  • mohuntergirl

I didn't have any problems with my rifle. Sent it back just to comply with the recall after rifle season was over. I got my shipping label quickly and I got my rifle back within a week of shipping it in January. Not sure why other people had problems.

On a personal note – I think this rifle is great. The friend I was with when I broke it in said he's never seen a rifle that shoots so accurately out of the box. l let everyone try it out and they are always impressed.

  • Charley77

Most of the people commenting on here sound like they aren't old enough to be handling a firearm anyway.

  • Bruce mitchell

my rifle came back a mess, glue bulging out of the rubber inset grips. A big gouge out of the stock and the rifle is filthy. I had only fired 12 shots out of my rifle. I seriously do not believe it has the same bolt since it has so much wear. And to top it off the magazine is broken. NOT just apart, broken. I cleaned and polished my rifle before I sent it, i thought it would come back in at least as good condition, really better.

  • Danny

I Inspected my rifle in front of the store owner who sold it to me and made him sign that the weapon is flawless. Also informed him that if it was returned with the slightest blemish war would be declared.I had already vowed never to enter this store over another incident and this recall forced me to go back on my word. Now I read that my weapon is going to be returned with an un blued punch hole. I wonder if he and his minions are prepared

  • Steve

Sorriest rifle I ever purchased. Second time sending back to get fixed. Sorriest customer service I've ever seen. Who wants a gun that won't fire!? I'm going back to my reliable Winchester.

  • Kevin McGillicuddy

My rifle won't fire in the half the time on cold winter days in Canada. Couldn't shoot two of the biggest bucks I'd ever seen.
