Women's 10m Air Rifle Olympic Recap

USA athlete Jamie Beyerle Gray turned in strong performances in both the qualifying and final rounds in women's air rifle to finish fifth.

Gray, Scherer Make Finals, Miss Medals

USA shooters Jamie Beyerle Gray and Sarah Scherer shot their way into the finals in Women’s 10m Air Rifle—both with 397/400, two points off the lead pace—and finished in fifth and seventh, respectively.

Gray, from Lebanon, PA, turned in a strong performance, a 97/100 and 98/100 book-ended by a pair of perfect 100s in the qualifying round to earn her spot in the finals. Her finals round wasn’t bad either, with only two sub-10 scores—a 9.5 on her first shot and a 9.7 on her third (in finals competition, the scoring rings are broken into tenths of a point, with a center shot worth 10.9—but she wasn’t able to close the gap and climb onto the medal stand, despite a pair of 10.7s.

Scherer, from Woburn, MA, fired three 99s and a 100 to make the qualifying round and shot just a single sub-10 score in the final, a 9.5. However, her 10s were in the low end of the range—from 10.1 to 10.5—and it just wasn’t enough.

The Chinese women continued their winning ways in women’s air rifle. The gold medal went to China’s Siling Yi, who dropped but a single point in the qualifying round and then smoked her competition in the

Katerina Emmons, who shoots for the Czech Republic and is the wife of USA men’s shooter Matt Emmons, finished fourth.
