Mike, a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, is the defending Olympic silver medalist in three-position rifle, although this year he will be competing in the prone event. This is his fourth Olympics. He made the team in 1992, finishing in 15th place in prone, and in the 2000 games he competed in three-position rifle, coming in ninth. His big performance came in 2004. He competed in two events--prone and three-position--and captured silver in the latter.
Mike has been assigned to the USAMU since 1998. He got his start in a local junior club when he was nine years old, coached by his father, who was rifle coach for the Marine Corps and the Naval Academy at the time. Mike was a four-time All American at West Virginia University, where he led the team to three NCAA championships. He earned this year’s Olympic berth with a first-place finish in 50 meter prone at the trials.
