.300 Winchester Magnum Match Loads

Comparison:.308/168 vs. .300/190 at 1,00 yards

200 yard zero, 10 mph Crosswind
1,000 Yd. Velocity Drop (in.) Wind Drift (in.) Flight Time (sec.) Energy (ft-lbs) Goes Subsonic (yd.)
.308 1,091 418 119.5 1.81 444 963
.300 1,408 291 80.5 1.49 836 1,326

While most tactical rifles and shooters today rely on the .308 Winchester cartridge, there are those who reach for a .300 Winchester Magnum, and for good reason. It's a great mid-ground performer, providing a good deal more reach than a .308 without the disadvantages of the big .338 Lapua and .50 BMG.

There are several top-notch match-grade .300 Winchester Magnum factory loads available--three with 190-grain hollowpoint boattails and one utilizing Hornady's polymer-tipped 178-grain A-Max.

A 190-grain bullet exiting at the velocities provided by the .300 offer a significantly flatter trajectory and less wind drift than a 168-grain bullet from a .308. I've shot distant steel silhouettes with a .308 side by side with a .300 chambering 190s. The difference is worth experiencing.
