British gunmaker W.W. Greener's (1834-1921) classic book The Gun and its Development was first published in 1881 and was revised nine times before the final edition was published in 1910. It is an important book for the firearms historian for many reasons. It is a clear and lucid account of the evolution of the firearm from its beginnings and contains valuable information on the dawn of smokeless powder usage. All of which is written by a man who was alive and building guns during the transitions from muzzleloading percussion guns to breechloading cartridge guns and from black powder to smokeless powder. The section on rifles details the history of rifling and features cutaway drawings of the day's most popular bolt-action rifles. The Gun and its Development is reprinted as a 6x9-inch, 832-page paperback by Lyons Press, Dept. RS, P.O Box 480, Guilford, CT 06437; (800) 962-0973.
