I wrote my first review of Unknown Munitions load development school and services in 2019 and have been amazed by the growth of the company ever since. Starting out as a small ammunition company, it has morphed into so much more, including a custom rifle shop and certified cerakote coating, all while still offering some of the finest custom loaded ammunition. Jake and Jessica Mushaney have built a team of professional employees as well as made key relationships with other leading industry companies, and together they are making quality products and offering unique services.
Located in Post Falls, Idaho, Unknown Munitions is building superb custom rifles on many custom components they have designed and manufactured, such as their own scope rings, detachable bottom metals and muzzle brakes. They also partnered with BAT Machine , a well-known local action maker in Idaho, to develop the Vesper receiver built to be the most accurate bolt rifle receiver for backcountry hunting, drawing upon decades of experience in crafting receivers used to set countless world records in Benchrest competitions. The Vesper action was high on my list of receivers to build upon and it didn't take long for me to get a rifle order placed with the team.
Custom Rifles (Photo courtesy of Colton Bagnoli) The UM team is constantly innovating new products to provide new solutions for customers looking to build custom rifles or upgrade an existing rifle for better accuracy, so I had them build me a new rifle chambered in 7 PRC. Starting with their Vesper Action in a medium length fitted with a UM DBM and center-fed magazine. I selected a PROOF Research carbon fiber-wrapped 20 inch, 8 twist barrel for the build, finished with a 5⁄8x24 threaded muzzle for my Thunder Beast Ultra 7 suppressor . For a stock, I chose the Nimrod designed by Lane Precision as a long range stock with an extremely comfortable vertical style grip. This stock has quite a different feel compared to other stocks and fits me very well in terms of my connection to the rifle when behind the gun. After bedding, the stock was coated by the UM cerakote team with a unique multicam camo finish that I worked with the painter to design. After a sample pattern was approved, we finalized the stock and went with my favorite neon green accents to complete the build.
Load Development (Photo courtesy of Colton Bagnoli) After the rifle was complete, I had UM’s Load Development team work their magic to find the best load data for the rifle with Hammer 170gr HHT copper mono bullets in Petersen brass. The team was able to find a load that repeatedly shot sub 1⁄2 MOA groups at 600 yds and provided 50 loaded rounds of ammunition. While many custom rifle shops offer custom load data or ammunition for their rifles, UM has a special team dedicated solely to custom load development for their customers' rifles. Each member has years of experience with developing load data for long-range shooting and works with the customer to find out the best projectile for the rifle and its intended application. This knowledge base allows them UM to provide the most accurate ammunition for their clients rifles and can keep them stocked with ammo for years to come. The ammunition and load data provided by UM for my 7 PRC shoots consistent 5 shot groups under 1⁄2 inch and 10 shot groups well under 1” at 100 yards. This rifle and ammunition combination is without a doubt the best shooting rifle in my collection by far, and that’s saying something.

Everything Tikka (Photo courtesy of Unknown Munitions) Aside from full-house custom-built rifles, UM has built a unique following for their custom Tikka rifle builds and has become the shop for all things Tikka, including their Tikka specific rings and DBMs to provide shooters with a reliable and accurate rifle that Tikka has been known for world-wide. Even with Tikka's reputation for excellent factory rifles, people always want to “bling” out a build and make their rifle truly their own. UM Tikka builds are a sight to be seen and shoot just as well as they look, especially when set in the new RokStok.
RokStok (Photo courtesy of Unknown Munitions) Building on their innovative drive to produce products for long-range shooting, UM developed a new stock concept with Stocky’s Stocks , that would put conventional stock manufacturers on their heels with a unique stock. The wild design is mostly due to its true negative comb being 1⁄2” above the centerline of the bore with a 12-degree angle sloping up to the top of the recoil pad. This concept has been one of many discussions for years, but UM was the first to bring the full concept to market. The benefit of the negative comb being above the bore allows the shooter the best possible recoil management as the bore is now driving rearward and below the shooter's shoulder, not above like traditional stocks. This feature will help shooters keep the muzzle rise down and spot their own impacts better, which is a huge bonus for hunters as many of us hunt solo and don't have a spotter to assist in the field.
The stock is available for Tikka long actions, most Rem 700 clone footprints, and custom actions such as Defiance and BAT actions . Offered in full carbon fiber shells or with custom cerakote camo finishes done by the UM cerakote team, the options are limitless for your next build. UM even started working with Alpine Rifles to offer a custom RokStok machined from solid Walnut and Maple wood blanks. These wood stocks are incredibly sharp-looking and give the new wood stock craze a new offering that will surely turn heads. Not only is the stock design extremely functional, it is offered in lightweight carbon fiber shells and wood to fit every shooter's specific needs.

They are continually growing their team of professionals to expand their capabilities in providing custom rifles, rifle components, ammunition, and cerakote finishing for their customers in a one-stop shop that is unmatched in the industry. Having personal experience with every aspect of the services, I can without a doubt say that they will continue to grow and produce new products for the hunting and precision shooting market.
