Some highly historic and significant Civil War items are going up for auction in Rock Island Auction Company's May Premier Auction, happening May 19-21. Rock Island offers collectors the opportunity to acquire rare, historic and significant collectibles such as fine arms, art, vintage flight jackets, Tiffany & Co. swords and more.
These historic artifacts all relate to Medal of Honor recipient General Nelson Appleton Miles. Taken as a whole, these lots represent an incredible opportunity to own an array of arms from the second half of the 19th century spanning from the Civil War through the Indian Wars.
Considered to be one of the most important war trophies of any American war: the historic, finely engraved and silver-plated, Beaumont-Adams Double Action Percussion Revolver was presented to Confederate States of America President Jefferson Davis by Robert Adams of London and personally surrendered to Union Cavalryman John Hines of the 4th Michigan Cavalry at the time of Davis’ Capture on May 10, 1865.
This extraordinary pair of presentation-cased, factory-engraved, silver-plated, gold-trimmed Colt Model 1861 Navy revolvers with spectacular raised relief grips is among the best-known pair of silver Colt revolvers in existence. This cased set – in magnificent condition, and a work of beauty worthy of any art museum – is also a set representative of the treasured history of the Civil War. This history combined with the rarity and beauty of the set itself truly sets them into a class of their own. Few Civil War presentation revolvers, let alone cased pairs, retain both their beautiful artistry and high condition as well as have traceable history. This set has all three.
Abner Doubleday graduated from the United States Military Academy in the middle of the class of 1842 and was assigned to the 3rd U.S. Artillery which makes the engraving on the frame of the pistol particularly relevant. He served in the Mexican American War, the Seminole Wars, the Civil War.
Below is a detailed list of other superlative military collectibles including cannons, presentation swords, confederate revolvers, rifles and more.
